Specialists have demonstrated how interpretation of the probable-laboratory supported (PRLS) category in the updated Awaji criteria can affect diagnostic rates in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The revised El Escorial Criteria (R-EEC) and Awaji criteria have been widely used for diagnosing ALS. However, a number of studies have reported that the Awaji criteria have lower sensitivity than the R-EEC due to the deletion of the clinically probable-laboratory supported (PRLS) category that requires upper motor neuron (UMN) signs in one region.
