Need for spinal cord MRI monitoring highlighted

Inflammatory activity in a significant proportion of MS patients will be missed if MRI monitoring is limited to the brain rather than including the spinal cord, according to new study findings.

In a poster presentation at ECTRIMS 2018, researchers from centers in Rome, Italy, reported their study of the frequency of inflammatory activity in the brain and spinal cord.

They studied 828 MS patients (median disease duration 5.8 years) for whom sufficient data (including both brain and spinal cord scans) were available. Just over half had relapsing-remitting disease.
