Association of acute-phase blood biomarker levels with sport-related concussion in college athletes

  • Athletes with concussion had significant elevations in multiple traumatic brain injury (TBI) biomarkers compared with preseason baseline and 2 groups of control athletes without concussion during the acute postinjury period.

Why this matters

Sport related concussion (SRC) reflects the most subtle form of mild TBI and diagnosis presents challenges due to the reliance on subjective self-reported symptoms. These results provide additional support for future studies to validate biomarkers for clinical use, ultimately increasing diagnostic certainty of SRC.
